No argument here - a bright blotch of color and pattern tied up Audrey Hepburn style is a great little summer accessory. But, honey, I think what you're referring to is called a bandana! Lucky for you, Beyond Her has several to choose from, and they're not the mass produced, made in China versions found in chain stores everywhere. They're pre-washed, hand-dyed 100% cotton, limited edition "neck scarves" that will keep you looking good all through summer - and help you on the dusty trail besides!

There are so many names for this single item - don't know why, but it's wreaking havoc with my SEO! By the time I've listed all these in one- and two-word combinations, I'm usually out of characters, so thanks, language.
At any rate, this very fact has led to entire articles on the lexicography of the name. This one, in the Huffington Post, is short and sweet, and shows examples of some of the cutest, um, towels ever, outside of Beyond Her. Don't forget that these little swatches of cloth are cross-trainers. I use them in bread baskets, as mini-tablecloths for snacks and barware, as napkins, placemats. And I use them for workouts, just because, pre-washed and 100% cotton, mine are so absorbent they make terry look weak! Think they're too pretty to use? Don't be daft! Beyond Her tea towels launder beautifully and look good for years. There's only one thing that changes: they get softer. Oh bliss. Nothing adds flair like a scarf, and nothing looks cooler than the gal who looks like she just threw on her scarf – just so. In Her's experience there's no great trick to it, but just to get you started on how to rock our new linen scarves, here's an at-a-glance tutorial.Captions provide the how-tos. You might have noticed: we're not big on single purpose textiles. We call these our "Switch-Swatches" because they're whatever you want them to be. Don't get boxed in by labels! Use your Beyond Her linen scarves in any creative way you choose! Got other ideas? Please send your pics - when it comes to artisan fabrics, we're in favor of imagination!
Excuse the rant, but whose idea was it to put this ugly sign in my face every time I get behind the wheel? I mean, we get it, right? Who doesn't use a car seat? Well, me - because I haven't had a 4 year old for about 30 years. This is eye pollution! And I think that being exposed to this several times a day just desensitizes all of us, the opposite of what good design should do. Whew! Had to get that off my chest.
Thank you, West Elm, for this pithy infographic explaining what all of us makers keep trying to communicate. Does anyone really believe that monstrous corporations are the key to the future? Read all about West Elm's initiative to support local makers and business here.
One of my favorite ways to use a waxed canvas storage tote - as a vase. Spring!
#nature #flower #floral #table #homedecor #decorating #springdisplay If I were trying to furnish my first apartment or home in 2016, I'd start at West Elm. Why? I have four distinct reasons: Scale The furnishings are light and airy, ideal for smaller places. As opposed to those hulking overstuffed pieces that swallow you whole and make every room seem small. Design I love that they've taken the mid-century style and tweaked it a bit so the pieces don't look vintage - they look modern. Neutrals Larger pieces from West Elm come in a variety of neutrals that are not khaki, or denim, or olive - more like dove gray. They'll go through a couple of accessory updates without being bland. Value Prices are not cheap but not expensive. Who buys heirloom furniture anymore? Who even wants it? I feel like you'll have their sofas until you move into your next habitat - and you know it's not going to fit there anyway = ) At the Same TableI spent the day at a local West Elm recently, hawking my own wares. Although I suspected it, I couldn't believe how well the two of us got along. We are definitely on the same page, aesthetics-wise. See below. For those of you who don't have the Internet, West Elm stocks an enormous range of furniture, decor, housewares, bedding and bath linens and art. You could literally furnish a home in an afternoon. And after spending ample time wandering the store, examining everything from cocktail glasses to sectional couches, I would venture to say you're not going to make a big mistake. I don't know many other retailers I would feel that confident about. And Then There's ThisThe other thing I love about West Elm is their relationship with artists.
Not only do they carry and feature local artists (!) in their stores, they have awarded grants to several popular artists and provided them with placement to help them grow their brands. And guess what? I like all of their stuff, too. It's hard not to, as you can see from browsing through their website. So thank you, West Elm, for being a good guy, and for helping us indies feather our nests! #westelm #westelmhouston #home #artisan #shoplocal #indie #craft #design Coasters are the mark of growing up. It's like announcing to the world that you have a surface worth protecting, which really doesn't happen until you start taking pride in your home. That is, after college. But for me, coasters are about a lot more than being stuffy and fru-fru. I have a lot of demands. I want coasters to be absorbent, lightweight and, above all, great-looking. Guess what?! I have the solution right here. Here's my recipe to make 6-10 adorable coasters in about 15 minutes.
It's that time of year: markets, holidays, food, housewarming gifts, fall, holiday gifts, table setting, cooking -- all that fun, festive fabulousness! This year I went a little crazy with dishtowel design and production, so the choices are plentiful. This is no place for sissies! And, I'm just saying, this is just a preview of what's in store. Hah! In store - get it?
When people hear that we've moved the Beyond Her studio to La Grange, Texas, they often say, "Bet you're going to the Round Top Antiques Fair, right?" The truth of the matter is, we had never been, or really even heard of, this 10-day bi-annual event for shoppers of all ages, lifestyles, ilks. Turns out, it is like Burning Man for decorators -- people wear costumes, decorate their handcarts, and evidently end up howling at the moon if their finds are good enough. You'll see everyone from restaurateurs, to soccer moms, to celebrities out pecking through the fields in Warrenton, and the high end markets in Round Top. Are there finds to be had? Well, there's always an "it" item or look - which last March was shabby chic. If you like the current trends, you're gonna find something. Last spring I was enamored with a lot of the upcycled furniture and art. But a lot of it is what might be gently referred to as "junque." As a friend of mine who had recently cleaned out her parents' house, remarked, "I just keep wondering how much of this came out of my mom's basement." You've been warned. A Veteran Takes Us in Hand The good news for Beyond Her is that we have found a permanent home right in the heart of Round Top. The Gallery at Round Top (see TGART's website here) has been carrying BH since August, along with beautiful fine art, gorgeous artisan jewelry and woodworking, and even handmade soaps and honey. Owner Karen Vernon (herself an accomplished artist) offered to host a Trunk Show for us during the busy Antiques Fair (Sept 26 - Oct 4). Wow! So we're taking just about everything over for a Her Extravaganza! All those new products you've seen on FB and Instagram? They'll be there! And so will I -- at least on Saturdays. It's a great honor, a great venue and a great opportunity. If you are hankering for a Road Trip into the best of Central Texas, pack your bags and get there early (the traffic can be horrendous). We'll leave the light on for ya! |
