is the reaction to both the absurdity and the wonder of everyday life expressed by Paule Hewlett, the artist behind Beyond Her. As a lifelong creative professional, Paule has always produced handcrafted items featuring her natural yet contemporary art. Beyond Her was officially launched in 1999 with the Art for Every Day calendar. Since then, the product line has adapted to Paule's forays into different mediums. She currently works in pen and ink, converting her botanical and animal images into silk screens, creating a modern line of quality home and fashion accessories, in addition to fine art.
Paule and her husband Michael develop, print and fabricate the artisan goods in their studio in a small town in Texas. It's a true cottage industry!
Indie design, small batch production, local & lovable
Beyond Her goods are produced in small batches, by hand, creating variations in texture, color, imprint pressure, etc. That is the nature of hand-crafted goods. Our limited editions are just that. Do not despair! Chances are, we will have something you'll like just as well the next time you look! Most Beyond Her products are produced by us, in our shop, but we do sometimes outsource to small local printing, silkscreening or binding shops. Whenever possible, we purchase products made in the USA, from other small business owners, because we love this country and people who are passionate about their products.
The Story of Beyond Her
Once upon a time there was a little girl who stayed slightly confused, and slightly amused, by the way things work. "It's beyond me," she would sigh. Then she would go back to her painting. She thought she would understand more as she got older, but she actually understood less. At the age where she expected to be truly wise, it seemed like everything was beyond her understanding. So she went back to her paints, where she found everyday objects that were beautiful. And meaningful. In a very simple way. Things started to click. She painted more and analyzed less. It's not that things got any clearer. She simply had a view above and beyond.
Experiments in Natural Dyes
In the past few years, we have begun using natural dyes for both our art and product line. Plants like goldenrod, juniper berries, and marigolds are plentiful near our studio in La Grange, as well as pecans, peach and pear trees.
Her favorite color is Green.
Beyond Her focuses on natural and heritage materials that have stood the test of time. You'll find 100% cotton, cotton canvas, and cotton and rayon jersey among our textiles, and paperstocks with recycled content in our stationery line. Many of our products are designed to replace disposable goods, such as napkins, dish towels and totes. Although we believe beautiful packaging is part of the experience, we keep ours eco-friendly and to a minimum, making it re-usable wherever possible. We use solvent-free, water-based silkscreen inks to hand-screen our textiles — which is why they have a soft "hand." Beyond Her is not about consumption. We believe in creative living and surrounding yourself with beautiful things. Here's to life, above and beyond!
